Vince Colombo came to Atlantic Christian from Brockton, MA, in 1940. His college career was interrupted by World War II. Colombo served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945, then returned to A.C. and graduated Cum Laude in 1947, His wife, the former Lorette Osborne, is also a ’47 A.C. graduate.
Colombo’s athletic career centered around baseball and basketball. He played four years of basketball and two of baseball, including the infamous 1946 team. That was in the year A.C. won the conference championship but had the title withdrawn because Colombo had played professional baseball with the Wilson Tobs in 1942. Colombo later played for the Rocky Mount Leafs.
The Colombo’s reside in Shelby, where Vince is employed by MONY Associates. Colombo’s career, however, has been dedicated to education. He taught first in Baldenboro, then held principal’s positions in William Township, Robersonville, Plymouth and Rocky Mount. He served as superintendent of the Cleveland County Schools until retiring in 1979.
The Colombo’s have two children. Michael lives in Greenville, where he is a lawyer. Karen Colombo Calhoun lives in Columbia, SC, where she works for the Hartford Insurance Company.
Colombo earned his master’s degree from East Carolina (’51) and his doctorate from Duke (’76).
