Danny Phillips

Danny Phillips is one of Atlantic Christian’s most noted tennis players who was twice named All-American. He was selected for the NAIA All-American Team in 1972-73, and was picked the most valuable player on the college tennis team during those years. He was on four teams which appeared in NAIA National Championships (1969-1973) in Kansas City, MO., finishing 14th, 6th, 5th, and 10th out of 50 teams. He held an all time won-lost career record while at Atlantic Christian and enjoyed an unbeaten season record of 23-0 in 1971.

He graduated from Atlantic Christian in 1973 with a bachelor of science in Mathematics and physical education. 1969 graduate of Goldsboro (N.C.) High School, he also graduated from workshops sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Association, Southern Tennis Association, and the N.C. Tennis Association. Following graduation from AC he played the professional W.A.T.C.H. tennis circuit throughout Florida and in the United States for about six months and then became head tennis professional and director of the tennis program at the New Bern, N.C., Country Club. Phillips held similar positions at the Pinetree Country Club, Atlanta, 1976-79; the Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C., 1979-80; and the Walnut Creek Country Club in Goldsboro, 1980-84, at which time he served as tennis director and coach at Mount Olive College. While at Mount Olive, he was named “College Coach of the Year” for the 1981-82, 1982-83 seasons. He served as director of Tennis for the city of Kinston, 1984-85, where he supervised and coordinated all tennis programs within the city.

Phillips went to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in September of 1985 where he became director of tennis and national coach for the United States Sports Academy. Today he coordinates all tennis programs throughout the country, coaches the Davis Cup team, and travels domestically and internationally with the Saudi Arabia tennis teams. As director of tennis, he supervises and directs all tennis programs within the kingdom for the academy. He also organizes leagues, tournaments and instruction.

He is married to the former Lucia Lynn Bentley of Wilkesboro, N.C. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Phillips, 1907 Margaret Drive, Goldsboro, N.C.
