Bennett Flowers is one of Atlantic Christian College’s most noted athletes. Born in Goldsboro and reared in Wilson, he distinguished himself as a professional baseball player, but never played on an AC baseball team.
He was an outstanding athlete at Wilson’s Charles L. Coon high school and had signed a professional baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox in 1946 at the age of 17.
Following an 18-month tour on duty with the U.S. Army during World War II, he entered Atlantic Christian where he played basketball and football until he suffered a knee injury… this occurred during the final year of the college’s football program.
After college Flowers returned to professional baseball where he enjoyed a 15-year career playing also for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Philadelphia Phillies.
He and his wife, Colet, make their home in Wilson. They have two children Rhonda Colet Talbert of Rocky Mount, N.C. and John Bennett Flowers of Raleigh, N.C.; and a Grandson. Today he is a general contractor and is affiliated with Inco, Inc.
