Larry Jones, from Mount Olive, played basketball at Barton College from 1964 to 1968.
A starter for all four years, Jones was described by Ira Norfolk, his coach, as “tremendously strong, extremely durable, an excellent shooter, and an excellent team member.”
In 1966 he was one of the Carolinas Conference top rebounders with an average of 13.5 per game. He led the team in field goal percentage and had an average of 17 points per game. He led his team to a 15-12 record for the year.
In 1967 he led the team to a 16-12 record. He had an average of 14.3 points per game and led the team with a rebound average of 11.9. He was named All-Conference, All-District, Honorable Mention All-American and Most Outstanding Athlete on campus his junior year.
He was named All-Conference and Most Outstanding Athlete on campus his senior year.
Jones died in a car accident shortly before his scheduled graduation in the spring of 1968, but did receive a degree posthumously.
