Gordon Fulp, one of the first starts of the Barton College golf program and also one of its most acclaimed products in the PGA ranks, is a logical choice as the first golfer inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Recruited by Coach Ed Cloyd out of Jacksonville High School, Fulp was a four-year starter, medalist in numerous tournaments, and two-time captain.
He played a major role in one of the school’s most historic wins, an upset of Campbell when its program was ranked among the best in the nation.
Fulp, former head professional at Wilson Country Club, served six years in the U.S. Naval Reserve after earning a B.S. degree in business administration from the former Atlantic Christian College. A graduate of PGA Business Schools I and II in 1970 and ’71, respectively, he earned his Class A status in the PGA in 1972. A graduate of national club repair and teaching and playing workshops, he earned the PGA Master Professional status in 1986. He served as head pro at Lochmere and Devils Ridge Golf Club and Greenville Country Club, and as assistant pro at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, prior to his appointment at WCC.
Fulp’s distinguished playing career began early when he won the Jacksonville City Championship at the age of 15. Three-time champion of Jacksonville Country Club and runner-up at the state junior tourney, he competed overseas while in the service and was runner-up in the All Americans in Italy Golf Championship in 1969. He competed in the 1975 National Club Pro Championship, placed fourth in the 1976 N.C. Open, and tied for first in the Carolinas PGA in 1983 and the Pro President Championship in 1985. He has held countless PGA national positions and conducted two PGA National Junior Qualifications tournaments for girls and boys. He received the 1986 Palmer Maples Award, presented annually to the Carolinas PGA Teacher of the Year.
Fulp is married to the former Pell Pickett, a member of the math department faculty at ECU. They have three sons: Robert Gordon, Michael Pell and John David.
