When Ed Cloyd came to Atlantic Christian in the fall of 1953, tennis had not been played by this school in years, there had never been a golf team, and Wilson Gym was 13 years in the offing. Now, decades years later, AC has won dozens of championships in tennis, including two national titles, and several championships in golf, appearing many times in the national tournament.

Name it and there’s a good chance Cloyd has done it at AC. Although retired from his teaching position, in which he was twice chairman of the physical education department, Cloyd will coach the golf team one last time this spring. Cloyd, chairman of the P.E. department for a total of 16 years, was honored in 1980 with the North Carolina Association of Health, Physical Education and Health Award, has also served twice as athletic director.

Cloyd is the son of the late Dean and Mrs. E.L. Cloyd, his father having served as Dean of Students 37 years at North Carolina State University. Cloyd went from Raleigh’s Broughton High School to Davidson, where he graduated in 1939. Cloyd served in World War II and the Korean War, retiring with the rank of major. He is married to the former Ann Hendrix of Greensboro and they have three children; Paisley, Patricia and Edward.
