Scott Lamond is thankful for three people – Curtis Fortney (high school coach), Chris Brick (Barton Head Men’s Golf Coach at the time) and Sheila Milne (Barton College International Advisor) – for working with him on a full scholarship package in men’s golf to Barton.
Lamond, a native of Whitehaven, England, won the Scottish Under 16 in a playoff and was a Top 10 English Under 16 performer in 1993. Two years later, Lamond crossed the pond to the United States and played prep golf at Gallup High School in New Mexico.
Why did Lamond choose Barton? “I wanted the small school experience, coming from a small town myself. The experience just would not have been the same at a big school.”
Lamond can be seen as one of the catalysts for the reemergence of the Barton men’s golf program. As a senior in 2000, Lamond led the Bulldogs to their first of 14 straight NCAA Division II postseason appearances.
Lamond was a three-time All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) honoree (1997-99) and a three-time academic all-league selection. In 1999, Lamond nearly won the CVAC Championship but fell in a playoff. Lamond was also a member of the CVAC Men’s Golf All-Time Team.
Lamond’s contributions to the school carried off the course as well. Lamond was President of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and worked over 30 hours per week in the cafeteria for Aramark while at Barton.
Lamond did get a reality check when he first arrived at Barton. “I arrived at my dorm two weeks before my freshman year started and discovered I should have brought bedding. I slept on a mattress on the floor my first night!"
“I developed friends for life,” added Lamond, on recounting his days at Barton. “Many of my former teammates – Ben Bridgers, Courtney Faircloth, Kelly Dawkins, Anthony Laffoley and Sumner Alford – still play together.”
Lamond graduated cum laude with a Batchelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science, and a minor in history, in May 2000.
“I’ll always be thankful for the numerous folks at Barton who became like family: Dr. James B. Hemby, Jr. (Barton President Emeritus), Sheila Milne, the Barton Athletic Department, and Tony Tilley.”
Lamond, a resident of Wake Forest, N.C., stayed with Aramark after graduation and moved his way up the organizational chart while working at several colleges and universities including Peace, East Carolina, Campbell, Meredith, and Western Carolina. In 2019, Lamond became District Manager for Workplace Hospitality with Aramark and now has 35-plus accounts in six states.
Lamond, and his wife, Amy, are the proud parents of two sons: Kullan and Xander. Xander is a cancer survivor, and the family supports several organizations including St. Baldrick’s, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the MeFine Foundation through several fundraisers.
