Henry “Hank” Davis Graduated from the college in 1949 and participated in football, basketball, and baseball as a student. He was born in Greenville and moved to Wilson at a young age. He attended Coon High School and lettered in football, basketball and baseball.

As a baseball player at the college Davis was named to the All-North State Conference team in 1947 and 1948 and led the Bulldogs to runner-up finishes in league play. He signed a professional baseball contract with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1949. As a minor leaguer he played in Fayetteville, St. Augustine, FL, Springfield, MA, and Des Moines, IA. He was named Most Valuable Player of the St. Augustine Saints during his rookie year stint with that team. In September, 1950 he was promoted to the Chicago roster.

Davis served in World War II and was called to action in November of 1950 in Korea. During his military career he received the Purple Heart with 3 Starts, a Bronze Star, and the President’s unit Citation for the 4th Marine 22nd Regiment. Wounds sustained by Davis did cut short his very promising professional baseball career.

Davis settled in the Charleston, SC area and worked as an electrician in the Naval Shipyard. In 1957 and 1958 he coached football and basketball at Macedonia High School. He went on to officiate high school and college football in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. For five years he officiated semi-professional football in South Carolina and Georgia.

He is married to the former Joy E. Simmons and they currently make their home in North Charleston, SC. Davis has three children, three step children, and two step grandchildren.
