Jack McComas

Jack McComas is best remembered as the basketball coach who led the AC Bulldogs to the NAIA National in Kansas City in 1955. The same team captured the Carolinas Conference title, and won the NAIA District championships during the same year.

Not only was he a first-rate coach, he was an outstanding athlete in his own right. He made quite a name for himself in high school sports where he won the Paul Cross Award in basketball which was based on academics, athletic ability and character. He was All-State in basketball and baseball. He played basketball at North Carolina State University and was presented the school’s Alumni Athletic Award in 1947. He played professional baseball, 1949-53, for Denver, Raleigh, and Wilson in the Coastal Plain League.

McComas has been a state employee, 1968-87, working in vocational rehabilitation with the Department of Correction and the Department of Administration, Division of Youth Services. He presently serves as a social worker at the Stonewall Jackson School.

He and his wife, the former Mary Louise Hoots, make their home in Mount Pleasant. He has four children and two children.
