H.H. Cunningham graduated from Atlantic Christian in 1936 with a degree in history. He later completed masters and doctorate work at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He played basketball, baseball and tennis, the only three varsity sports of the time. He married the former Mary Shaw Robeson and they had three girls; Anne, Margaret and Jama. Cunningham was born in Warren, Ind. but came to AC from Owenington, Ky. He served as Academic Dean and head of the history department at Elon College before taking a post with the University of Georgia in 1965. Author of Doctors In Grey, a highly regarded account of the Civil War, Cunningham was a recipient of the Bernard Baruth Award.
