Cliff Black is no author, but he has written a book, or better yet re-written a book: the Atlantic Christian basketball record book. Black, a 1972 graduate who came to A.C. from Conetoe, holds school records for most points (2,189, best scoring average (19.4) and field goals (875) in a career. His senior season Black scored 750 points, averaged 27.8 points per game, and collected 287 field goas, all school records. He also holds single-game records for most points (52), most field goals (23), and most rebounds (29).
Black, the son of Annie Mae Black of Tarboro, now lives in Chesapeake, Va., where he has coached basketball at Manor High School ever since he graduated from A.C. Black and his wife, Vicki, have two children, Gina and Martin.
Black is one of only three athletes to ever be named Athlete of the Year on the Year on the A.C. campus three times. Black was also Most Valuable Player three times, a fixture on all-conference and all-district teams, and also one of the most popular players to ever wear the A.C. uniform, especially with the area youngsters of the day.
Black, having been out of college 12 years, is by far the youngest athlete ever named by the selection committee, an honor more than justified by his credentials.
