Doug Godwin got an introduction from legendary ACC/Barton Coach Jack “Doc” Sanford at one of his senior high school baseball games at Beddingfield in 1980.  Doug admired Doc’s honesty and then-Atlantic Christian College was the only school he applied to, and the rest is history as he pointedly put in.

Doug would go on to play four seasons with the Bulldogs (1981-84) with the 1984 squad being one of the greatest teams in school history.  The ’84 squad captured the first-ever Carolinas Conference Championship and won the NAIA District 26 Regular Season Championship as well.  In addition, the Bulldogs were runner-up in the district tournament.

Doug’s senior year included several major awards including First-Team All-CIAC and NAIA All-District 26 honors.  Doug was also the league runner-up in the MVP race.

Doug was named the Atlantic Christian College’s Male Athlete of the Year for the 1983-84 school year (Kiwanis Award) and earned Academic All-American accolades.

Doug said competing against several NCAA Division I schools and defeating several notable programs like James Madison, East Carolina and Duke were milestones during his collegiate career.

Doug also explained beating Duke in the season opener on February 26, 1984, in Durham, N.C., gave him a feeling that season was going to be special.

Hoisting Coach Sanford on his and the team’s shoulders after winning the CIAC Championship on April 18, 1984, in Laurinburg, N.C., was one of Doug’s fondest memories.

A life-long resident of Wilson County, N.C., Doug and his wife, Terri, are the proud parents of four sons (Ryan, Blake, Everett and Benjamin) and one daughter (Rachel).

Doug is currently Vice President & Chief Financial Officer at S.T. Wooten Corporation with 40 years of continuous service.
