Harry Helmer, known then and now as “Lefty”, was a standout in baseball but only played one year of that sport at AC because he was already playing professionally. He played four years of football. A native of Pittsburgh, Helmer came to AC from Bordentown, N.J., where he attended military school. He pursued a career in professional baseball after graduating from AC with a degree in Physical Education in 1950. He married the former Peggy High of Wilson, and they had five children; Harry Jr., Kathy, Susan, Margie and Pam. The Helmers lived in Wendell until 1956, then moved to their present hometown of elm city. Helmer, one of three living inductees, is executive vice-president of Teledyne Thermatics, a firm he joined in 1960.
