Kenneth T. Rand, Jr. launched AC to a new level of tennis excellence when he won the Carolinas Conference singles title in 1971 at No.1 flight, ending High Point’s lengthy dominance. AC had contended for years at the district level, but in ’71 won the conference for the first time. Rand was also Doubles champion that year.
Rand came to AC from Broughton High School in Raleigh, where he had been MVP in 1966. As a junior Rand played on the state championship team.
He was MVP for AC in his sophomore, junior and senior years, and twice competed in Kansas City, Mo. at the national tournament.
Rand’s tennis excellence did not end with his college days. For the past 14 years he has coached the Old Dominions men’s team, compiling a 68% winning record. His latest team was probably his best, finishing with a 21-3 record.
Rand also received his master’s degree from Old Dominion. He is married to the former Kathy Schaefer and they have two children, Kenneth, III and Brittany.
Rand is the first member of the Hall so elected solely for his accomplishments as a tennis player.
