An unlikely event led Candice (Moore) Wilson to Atlantic Christian College/Barton College.  The untimely passing of Candice’s mom during her senior year in high school led the Maine native to do some soul-searching and a new environment in a different region was the best solution.

At ACC, Candace was best known for elevating Cheerleading to varsity-level status.  Candace was the first student in school history to earn varsity status on the cheerleading squad as a freshman and was the first-ever cheerleader to serve as Team Captain twice.

Candace was instrumental in changing the voting system for cheerleading at the school.  Candace helped end the student body vote and turned the voting over to a panel, administrators, athletes and student leaders.  Candace believed agility and skill took precedence over popularity and slammed the door shut on a questionable voting process.

Candace helped change the way cheerleaders were selected and helped usher the program into its current competitive era of Spirit (Cheer and Dance) at Barton College.

Candace was extremely active on campus as she served on Homecoming Court and the Student Life Committee and was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.  Candace was also the WRA Woman of the Year and Miss Pine Knot.

After graduating in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in English, Candace served in a variety of roles including advertising and marketing, copywriting, modeling and directing television spots.  Candace also spent 12 years with The Virginian-Pilot and a decade with Spirit Cruises International.

Candace says she owes her success to the broad education she received at ACC, especially her creative writing skills she developed during her senior year.

Candace and her husband, Norbie, currently live in Virginia Beach, Va.  Her family includes her son, Bert, daughter-in-law, Evelyn, grandchildren, Bennett Eli and Ellie Daven and her Dutch Shepherd, Daisy.
