Dick Knox is a 1961 graduate of Barton and currently lives in Chapel Hill. He is from Indianapolis, Indiana where he graduated from Pike High School in 1957. At Pike he received All-Conference honors in football, basketball and baseball.

At Barton Knox lettered for four years in basketball and track. He was named Athlete of the Year for 1957-58. In 1960 he was named to the All-District and All-Conference basketball teams. He earned a B.S. in Physical Education with a concentration in Math.

After college Knox was named head basketball coach, assistant football coach and assistant baseball coach at Dunn High School, where he also taught math. In 1964 he was named head basketball coach and head football coach at Jacksonville Senior High School. In 1967 he moved to New York where he was head basketball coach at Cornwall on the Hudson. In 1969 he returned to North Carolina where he taught at Wake County School and coached basketball. In 1971 he returned to Wilson at Fike High School. He served there as Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, Assistant Basketball Coach and later Head Football Coach. In 1978 Knox moved to Greensboro where he was the head football coach at Ben E. Smith High School in 1978-1979 and head football coach at Grimsley High School from 1979-1983.

In 1983 Knox went to work with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association as Assistant Executive Director. In 1986 he was named Associate Executive Director.

He is married to the former Joanne McSwain, also a former student at Barton. They have three children.
