Barton College Women's Soccer
The Lady Bulldogs have posted consecutive home shutouts against Salem College and North Greenville University last week to improve to 3-1-1 overall.
Barton has only allowed three goals in five games and senior goalkeeper Carson Moore has been in net for all three of the squad's shutouts. Moore ranks 39th in NCAA Division II with a goals against average of 0.563. Moore, who also features a .850 save percentage, has been aided by a defensive line that includes starters senior Kasey Byzewski, senior Adrianna Jimenez, sophomore Kelly Dolan and freshman Rachel Krueger and reserves senior Nicole Smith and sophomore Jessica Lime.
Freshman Lane Brooks has been moved from a defensive to offensive midfielder two games ago by first year head coach Todd Clark and the change has paid off immediately. Brooks has scored a pair of goals in each home win and now leads Barton with four goals on the season.
Brooks was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week on Tuesday for her outstanding play.
Junior Ashley Batchelor and freshman Taylor Doeble follow Brooks with three points apiece (1 G, 1A). Freshman Haley Bigler has the Lady Bulldogs other tally. Sophomore Kathryn Smith leads Barton with two assists.
Barton knocked off Bluefield College, 2-1, on the road in overtime last season. Junior Emily Futral scored one of the Lady Bulldogs goals in that contest on an assists by Byzewski. Futral and Byzewski – both All-Conference honorees last year – are both still searching for their first points of 2014.
Bluefield College Women's Soccer
The Rams are winless on the season at 0-5-1. Bluefield – a member of the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference – is coming off its fourth shutout loss at Reinhardt University on Sunday to go to 0-2 on the road.
Senior Braley Freire has three of the Rams five goals on the season. Sophomore Whitney Browning and junior Jessica Newman have accounted for Bluefield's other two tallies. Browning scored a team-high nine goals in 2013.
A pair of freshmen netminders have split time in goal for the Rams so far this season in Amanda Brown (0-3, 2.00 GAA, .800 SV%) and Brandi Anderson (0-2-1, 3.10 GAA, .706 SV%).
Newman produced six goals and four assists last season including Bluefield's only score in its 2-1 OT loss to Barton.
