WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (4-10, 3-8) lost to Belmont Abbey (11-4-1, 9-1-1), 4-1, Friday night in the home finale at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
Belmont Abbey, winners of four straight contest, had four players find the back of the net as the visitors remained at the top of the Northwest Division.
Belmont Abbey's Anna Richard (Carthage, N.C.) opened the scoring just one minute into the match with her team-tying eighth goal of the year and added an assist on the second score in the victory.
Barton cut the margin to 2-1 when senior defender
Felicia Svensson (Molndal, SWEDEN) headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from junior midfielder JoJo Rodriguez (Hampstead, N.C.) in the 77th minute but the visitors with two quick goals to take back control.
Belmont Abbey's Haley Long (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added her eighth goal while Ryleigh Dougherty (Raleigh, N.C.) earned the victory in goal after stopping a pair of shots.
The Crusaders held a 25-6 edge in shots taken while freshman
Lily Diedrich (Severna Park, Md.) made six saves but suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
Barton hits the road to take on rival Mount Olive on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 5:00 p.m., in league action. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey hosts King on Tuesday in a conference contest starting at 4:30 p.m.
