CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Junior outside hitter Kati Wood (Pasadena, Md.) spiked a team-high 10 kills and had nine digs for the Barton College women's volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-22) Conference Carolinas road loss at Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday evening in the Oven.
Ashley Winters had a match-high 12 kills on a .500 hitting percentage as the Royals improved to 15-7 overall and 9-2 in the league. Queens – winners of five of its last six matches away from clinching the division.
Barton took the Royals to five-sets earlier in the year but were unable to extend the second meeting of the home-and-home series past three frames against a hot Queens team that has won five of its last six matches.
Wood and freshman setter Meka Hoover (Seagrove, N.C.) both just missed double-doubles. Hoover had a match-high 18 assists and lifted up eight digs. Classmate libero Amanda Grandy (Rolesville, N.C.) chipped in a match-high 23 digs.
The Royals and Bulldogs are ranked first and second in the conference in blocking, respectively, and both teams finished with 11.0 team blocks. BC freshman middle blocker Melissa Cochran (Knightdale, N.C.) led all players with seven (four solo, three assist). The hosts got six from Brittany Harvey (one solo, five assist) and Anna Gibbs (six assist).
The setter duo of Avery Moore (17 assists) and Taylor Riley (14 assists) set up the Royals offense that hit .190 in the match including a .361 clip in the first set that set the tone for the match.
Barton was held to a .000 hitting percentage.
Junior defensive specialist Chelsea Fleury (Camden, N.C.) had the only two service aces of the match for the Bulldogs. Fleury also tallied seven digs.
After the 10 kills by Woods, only Cochran with five kills and junior Meredith Watkins (Oxford, N.C.) with two had multiple kills.
Barton returns home from a five-match road swing against Conference Carolinas East Division foe Pfeiffer University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
