BUENA VISTA, Va.-Freshman Haley Bigler provided the Barton College women's soccer team with a second half lead but host Southern Virginia University was able to net the equalizer with just 3:42 left in regulation as the two squads settled for a late 1-1 double overtime tie Saturday night.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-0-1 Overall) stayed undefeated on the early season while the Knights (0-2-2) remained winless.
Barton and Southern Virginia had to wait an extra three hours before battling on the pitch due to lightning and the extended 110-minute match did not finish until well after midnight.
The visiting Bulldogs dominated play with a 24-7 shot advantage and 9-0 corner kick surplus but Bigler was the only Barton player to get the ball past SVU goalies MaKenzie Cox and Autum Cox.
Freshman Lane Brooks took a team-high six shots for Barton and sophomore Kathryn Smith took four cracks at the Knights net.
Barton extended its undefeated streak in overtime games to 10 games (7-0-3) and had the best chances at winning the game in the two OTs with six shots after the 90-minute mark. Smith had her final attempt stopped in the first overtime and freshman Rachel Krueger was denied by Autum Cox' fourth save in the 110th minute.
MaKenzie Cox had a game-high five saves over the first 76 minutes but also allowed the Bigler tally.
Bigler's first collegiate goal was an unassisted marker in the 61st minute.
Senior goalie Carson Moore and Barton's defense was closing in on its second straight shutout to start the season before Kora Jewell scored her unassisted equalizer at the 86:18 mark.
Moore (1-0-1) did have two saves on the night.
The Lady Bulldogs had several other chances to score in regulation. Brooks hit the post in the 12th minute and had two other attempts on frame. Junior Ashley Batchelor, freshman Taylor Doeble, and sophomore Kelly Dolan all had shots stopped at some point as well.
Barton concludes a three-match road swing to start the season in its Conference Carolinas opener at Converse College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
