LEBANON, Ill.-The Barton College men's volleyball team lost a pair of 3-0 tilts to Lindenwood University and Quincy University on the first day of the McKendree Crossover Tournament in the Statham Center Friday.
Barton slipped to 6-13 overall and will conclude play in the event against the host McKendree Bearcats on Saturday at 3 PM EST (2 PM CST).
MATCH ONE: Lindenwood 3, Barton 0
The Lions hit .413 in sweeping the Bulldogs in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-14.
Lindenwood (15-6 overall), one of the nation's top offenses, leading NCAA Division I-II in service aces per set and ranking fifth in kills per set was able to tally six aces and 38 kills in three sets.
Junior Zach McCalla led Barton with eight kills. Freshmen Chad Stanback Jr. and Jonathan Novoa-Miralles followed with six and five kills, respectively. Freshman Federico Pagliara totaled 20 assists and junior libero Michael McMahan made a match-high eight digs. Senior Tyler Malpass, junior Ladislav Lelkes and McCalla were all part of three of Barton's seven team blocks.
The Bulldogs kept the first set close that featured five lead changes and 13 ties. Lindenwood finally took the opening set with a 7-4 closing surge after the score was tied for the last time at 18-18. The Lions hit over .400 in both the second and third to produce more comfortable set wins.
Tim Huizinga paced LU with nine kills and seven digs. Colin Hackworth, a three-time Player of the Week this season, chipped in seven kills and three aces. Tim Schmidt orchestrated the hot-hitting Lions offense with 29 assists.
MATCH TWO: Quincy 3, Barton 0
McCalla and Novoa-Miralles each ripped 11 spikes for the Bulldogs but Quincy was able to squeak out close wins in the second and third sets to pick up its second win of the season against Barton.
The Hawks, who needed five sets against BC in the first meeting, was able to win in straight sets this time by scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-22. Quincy hit .286, more than 100 points more than the Bulldogs .167.
Lelkes spiked eight kills as well for the Royal Blue and White with Pagliara notching 33 assists. Lelkes also had four block assists.
McMahon, who leads the nation in digs per set, continued his strong defensive play with a match-high 15 digs.
Quincy scored the first four points of the match and never trailed in the first set. A Novoa-Miralles kill put Barton within one point of tying the match at 24-23 in the second but the Hawks won the next three serves to take the commanding 2-nil advantage. The final set remained close again with 15 ties before QU won three of the final four points to end play with the three-point triumph.
The Hawks used a balanced attack with Ian Lawson supplying a team-high nine kills while Andrew Cavanaugh, John Pranger and Jack Gamache all pounded down eight spikes. Brian Rogan had 27 assists and Jarrod Kelso factored on five of Quincy's six blocks.
