WILSON, N.C.-Senior middle blocker Melissa Cochran smashed 14 kills and had five blocks in leading the Barton College women's volleyball team to a straight set victory over Conference Carolinas North Division rival Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon in the Dog House.
Cochran tallied her 14 spikes on 25 attempts without an error for a smoking hot .560 hitting percentage in the 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 win.
The Lady Bulldogs hit .229 as a team to end a four-match winless streak and improve to 8-14 overall and 6-6 in the league. Pfeiffer remained winless on the season at 0-20 and 0-12.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Micol added 11 kills; senior libero Corinna Morton registered a team-high 10 digs and two aces; and freshman setter Riley Bane contributed 25 assists in BC's triumphant effort.
Consecutive kills by Cochran put the Lady Bulldogs in front for good in the first set at 10-9. Several Falcon errors then helped Barton to the eight-point set win.
Pfeiffer fought back in the second set and held a late 20-17 lead before the Lady Bulldogs rallied. Barton finished the period on an 8-3 run to take the 2-nil advantage. The late run featured aces by Morton and Micol before Cochran ripped her fifth kill of the set on set point
Barton set the tone of the third set early jumping out to a 10-4 cushion that included eight straight points on freshman Courtney Wiseman's service rotation. The Lady Bulldogs maintained a comfortable lead until senior Catherine Barber ended the match with BC's fifth ace.
Barton will host two more Conference Carolinas clashes in Wilson Gymnasium next weekend entertaining King University on Friday at 7 p.m. and Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
