WILSON, N.C.-Despite 34 combined shot attempts, host Barton College and visiting Pfeiffer University were unable to score in a double-overtime 0-0 tie in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action Thursday evening at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Barton senior goalkeeper Carson Moore made a game-high eight saves and freshman counterpart Blakeney Blair made six stops in the scoreless affair.
The Lady Bulldogs posted their seventh shutout of the season in moving to 6-3-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the league. The Falcons remain undefeated in their last four contests to go to 7-5-1 and 5-1-1.
Barton held a 14-12 shot advantage in regulation but Pfeiffer took seven of the eight shot attempts in the two 10-minute overtime periods to finish with a 19-15 final shot edge.
Moore, who was untested in the first half, made half of her eight saves in the second half and then made two more stops in each OT. Moore had three highlighted saves en route to her fifth shutout of 2014. Junior Aaliyah Sampson took the Falcons first shot on goal in the 51st minute but Moore caught the ball diving to her right. Moore then tipped a sophomore Jennifer Baity shot that was heading to the upper left corner of the goal wide in the 80th minute. The Greenville, N.C., product then saved away a potential golden goal off the foot of freshman Gretchen Dettlinger that was headed for the upper right corner just 49 seconds into the first overtime.
Barton's starting defensive line of senior Kasey Byzewski, sophomore Kelly Dolan, sophomore Jessica Lime and freshman Della Futral were also instrumental in preserving the clean sheet.
The Lady Bulldogs had several good looks at scoring including a great opportunity by junior Emily Futral in the 12th minute. Futral got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and then spun to her right to create some room and then ripped a curling shot that clanked off the crossbar.
Freshman Lane Brooks took a game-high six shots for the Royal Blue and White and was thwarted by Blair on all three of her attempts on frame. The Lady Bulldogs last real good look came in the 87th minute in which a series of good passes set up a breakaway chance for sophomore Grace Fehan on the left wing but her shot was once again denied by Blair.
Barton extended its unbeaten streak in overtime games to 11 at 7-0-4.
The Lady Bulldogs, who have only scored one goal in their last four games, will try and break out in a Conference Carolinas tilt at Erskine College (Due West, S.C.) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
