WILSON, N.C.-The Barton College women's soccer team held a dominating 19-6 shot advantage but was unable to find the back of Erskine College's goal in a 1-0 Conference Carolinas loss on an rainy Saturday evening at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The Flying Fleet (1-5 Overall, 1-0 Conf.) ended a 14-game losing streak dating back to the team's last win in September of 2012. The Lady Bulldogs (3-3, 0-1) had a three-game win streak come to an end.
Barton took shots early and often but sophomore goalie Ashton Burgess made saves on all 10 shots on goal in recording her first collegiate shutout.
Sophomore Jennifer Deppen scored the contests lone goal in the 69th minute on a free kick after Barton was whistled for just one of its six fouls. Deppen took the free kick near the left sideline some 30-plus yards out. Deppen's strong booted attempt bounced through the Lady Bulldogs' box and snuck inside the far-right post.
Deppen's first collegiate goal was just one of two shots on goal by Erskine. Barton junior goaltender Carson Moore made her only save of the match in the 36th minute on a Jamie Morris strike.
The Royal Blue and White provided the large Family Weekend home crowd with numerous scoring chances from the onset. The Lady Bulldogs took three of their 13 corner kicks in the first seven minutes and a pair of freshman Kathryn Smith shots in the opening rush were rejected by Burgess.
Barton held a 9-2 shot surplus at the intermission.
After Deppen put the Fleet on the scoreboard, the Lady Bulldogs had a great chance at tying the match back up in the 74th minute. Senior Taylor Parrish had a breakaway shot from close range stopped by Burgess and an ensuing rebound shot by sophomore Jodi Barber seconds later was once again denied by Burgess.
Barber led all players with eight shots including three on frame. All four of Smith's attempts were on goal. Senior defender Kasey Byzewski also had a quality crack at the equalizer in the 86th minute but Burgess was able to come up with her 10th save on the long-range blast.
Barton will next host local league rival Mount Olive College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
