HARTSVILLE, S.C.-Sophomore Nicole Smith's first collegiate goal provided Barton College with a late two goal lead that was squandered in a 3-2 Conference Carolinas women's soccer road loss to Coker College on Wednesday evening at Coker Soccer Field.
The Lady Bulldogs were bidding for a third consecutive shutout in league play before a pair of goals by Kelley Godbout in the final 12 minutes of regulation force overtime and Danielle Goerler scored the golden goal just 76 seconds into the first OT period.
The Cobras improved to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Barton dropped to 3-6 and 2-4.
After a scoreless first half that only had six combined shots, freshman Emily Futral started the late offensive battle for the Lady Bulldogs. Futral finished off her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a rebound in the 59th minute.
Smith doubled up the Royal Blue and White advantage when she dribbled into the offensive third in the 75th minute and took a 25-yard strike that snuck inside the side post.
Barton's defense did not allow a Conference Carolinas goal for a total of 286 consecutive minutes until Godbout broke through with the Cobras opening score in the 79th minute on an assist by Jenna Pacyna. Godbout kept up the late heroics for Coker with the equalizer just over three minutes later on a pass from Jalynn Fortt.
The Lady Bulldogs were held without a shot after Smith's tally but a pair of saves by BC sophomore goalie Carson Moore in the last eight minutes forced the first 10-minute overtime.
Goerler ended the game just one minute and 16 seconds into the first 10-minute, sudden-victory period by dribbling the ball past three Bulldog defenders and ripping an accurate shot into the back of Barton's cage.
In a matchup of the two busiest goalies in the conference, Coker netminder Lizz Morris made three saves for the win and BC's Moore came up with eight saves. Moore ranks second in the league with a save percentage of .832.
