WILSON, N.C.-A goal by sophomore Moriah Zusi just 5 minutes and 39 seconds into play was enough to lift visiting Palm Beach Atlantic University to a 1-0 NCAA Division II women's soccer victory over host Barton College on Thursday night at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The Sailfish held Barton to just two shots for its fifth shutout of the season. PBA returns to Florida 8-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 in road games.
The Lady Bulldogs have suffered five straight setbacks. Barton will enter its season finale against St. Andrews University on Saturday at 4-11 overall. The Lady Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Day as part of homecoming with game time slated for 1 p.m.
Zusi put the Sailfish ahead in the sixth minute when she struck a failed clearing attempt at the top of the 18-yard box into the upper, right-hand corner of the net. Zusi's game-winner was her second goal of the season.
Barton recorded just one shot in each half. Freshman Emily Futral took a shot from the right wing in the 28th minute and sophomore Amber Brush attempted a long blast in 84th minute. Both attempts on frame were saved by PBA junior goalie Allison Fox to preserve the clean slate.
The Sailfish only had nine total shots including four on goal but had numerous other opportunities that were broken up by the Lady Bulldogs offense. PBA nearly scored a couple times on its 10 total corner kicks taken by freshman Kasey Wyer including one headed by senior Juliet Waller in the 77th minute that was saved by Barton freshman netminder Kelsey Rothwell.
Rothwell made three saves in her first collegiate start including a nice save on junior Andrea Jefferson in the 36th minute from the door step on a set piece after a foul call.
Barton held a "Pink Out" that featured the players in pink gear in the Lady Bulldogs support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
