GREENVILLE, S.C. – Barton College's
Shanika Peterkin has been named the 2021-22 Herff Jones Conference Carolinas Female Athlete of the Year.
Peterkin, a senior women's basketball player from Virginia Beach, Va., wins the prestigious award for the second time in three years and is the fourth Barton student-athlete to garner the honor.
Peterkin spearheaded the Bulldogs to one of their best seasons in school history in 2021-22, leading Barton to a 28-2 record and both the Conference Carolinas Regular Season and Tournament Championships this past spring. Barton also advanced to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years and had a 22-game winning streak during the season.
Peterkin finished second in the league in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (10.6 rpg) to go along with 18 double-doubles and a league-high 83 blocks this year. For her efforts, Peterkin was named the Conference Carolinas Player and Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight season in 2021-22.
Peterkin leaves Barton as the school's all-time leader in rebounds (1,484) and blocked shots (477) and ranks fifth in total points scored (1,826). Peterkin is also a three-time NCAA Division II All-American and ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Division II history in blocked shots.
