Box Score WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (24-4), seeded second in the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championship, downed seventh-seeded Limestone (13-15) by an 82-72 score in the quarterfinal round Monday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs – winners of 10 straight games – put four players in double figures including a team-high 16 points from senior guard Dinah Neal (Browns Summit, N.C.) as Barton defeated Limestone for the third time this year. Neal also crossed the 1,000-point mark for her collegiate career.
Barton turned to its offense early, jumping out to a 30-16 advantage after one period of play and maintaining its lead the rest of the way. Sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Bulldogs led by as many as 17 points late in the third stanza and withstood several Saints rallies.
Limestone, whose run of seven straight appearances in the NCAA Division II National Tournament is likely over, was led by Taylour Hunter (Clemson, S.C.) with 19 points in the losing effort.
Barton senior forward Kianna Wynn (Knightdale, N.C.) also tallied a double-double – 14 points and 10 rebounds – as the Bulldogs hit 14-of-16 free throw attempts and tightened their grip on a possible berth to the playoffs. Barton is currently ranked No. 6 in the Southeast Regional rankings. Wynn also increased her all-time scoring total to 2,047 points (second all-time in school history).
Barton will move on to the league tournament semifinals to take on third-seeded Belmont Abbey (20-9) on Thursday in Franklin Springs, Ga., at 7:30 p.m. The Crusaders downed No. 6 King (14-14), 68-49, in its quarterfinal game at home.
