FRANKLIN SPRING, GA. – The Barton College women's basketball team claimed its 10th straight victory with a 68-65 overtime win against Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action.
The Lady Bulldogs (13-5, 8-2) tied a program-best 10-game winning streak and bested Emmanuel for the second-time during its last 10 games. The Lions (9-6, 4-5) made things interesting by making a fourth-quarter rally to force overtime, outscoring BC 16-9 in the frame. Emmanuel started the contest by shooting 53.8 percent as a team in the first quarter but struggled heading into the half as BC held a 29-27 advantage.
Barton was paced offensively by redshirt senior Alex Kimble, who recorded a team-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Junior Dinah Neal scored 12 points and added three assists for BC before fouling out late in the contest. Junior Kianna Wynn added 12 points and seven boards for the Lady Bulldogs, while freshman Shanika Peterkin tallied 12 points, four assists, and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lions were led by Mikayla Trombley, who notched a game-high 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting for Emmanuel. Emily Dreslinski tallied 10 points of the bench for Emmanuel, while Lochlain Corliss recorded nine points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the Lions.
Senior Tatyana Jackson started the scoring off for BC by hitting a jumper just 30 seconds into the contest but a 10-0 run by the Lions would change the momentum with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. Kimble put a halt to the run as her jumper for the Lady Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 10-4.
Trailing 16-6, Kimble would drain her lone three-ball of the contest to pull BC within seven of the Lions. BC got one final shot off before the buzzer sounded as Kimble just missed a jumper to end the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs shot just 18.8 percent from the floor as a team in the quarter, while Emmanuel hit more than 50 percent of its shots.
Barton responded in a huge way by using a 6-0 run to start the second quarter and trim the Emmanuel lead to 16-15. The run was capped off by back-to-back buckets from Dean with 8:31 left in the quarter. Taylor Delasbour drained a three for the Lions to stop the run and make it 19-15. The Lady Bulldogs would knot the score 19-19 as Peterkin finished a layup with 6:56 left before halftime.
Avery Scarbrough gave the Lions a 25-23 lead after hitting a pair of free-throw shots with 3:11 remaining and would be followed by a layup from Mariana Moreno Bendala to make it 27-23. Kimble started the comeback for BC, hitting a jumper to trim the deficit to two points. Senior Karimah Dean knotted the score at 27-27 with 34 seconds left on the clock after BC got the offensive board to keep the play alive. Peterkin recorded the final points of the half at the free-throw line, sinking a pair to give the Lady Bulldogs a 29-27 lead heading into the locker room.
The third quarter featured plenty of scoring as BC opened-up a five-point cushion following a jumper from Peterkin. The lead would expand to nine for Barton thanks to a 9-1 run with time winding down in the quarter. Senior Taura Jones recorded her only bucket of the game during the run, draining a three-ball with 1:38 left to make it 46-41. Neal finished-off the run by sinking two shots at the charity stripe with 26 ticks left on the clock. Emmanuel ended the quarter by hitting the final shot as Ajah Taylor made a layup with 16 seconds remaining.
The Lady Bulldogs stretched their lead to double-digits in the fourth quarter as Wynn finished a layup to make it 53-43. Neal upped the lead to 55-43 just 30 seconds later following a turnover by the Lions. Emmanuel trimmed the deficit as Corliss made a three to pull the Lions within nine. Scarbrough cut the BC lead to 57-50 with 4:43 left in the quarter following a layup.
Emmanuel started its comeback with four minutes left in the quarter as Dreslinski tallied four-straight points to cut the Barton lead to 58-54. Trombley made a pair of free-throws to pull her team within two points following a foul by Neal. Barton found itself with a 59-58 lead and the ball with less than a minute left to play but would commit a costly error by trying to call a timeout despite not having any left.
With a pair of free-throw shots and trailing by one, Trombley made 1-of-2 to knot the score 59-59. That is how the quarter would end despite a last-second shot by Emmanuel.
Entering overtime, the Lions would take the quick lead as Delasbour hit a layup to make it 61-59. Wynn followed suit for BC by making her own shot to knot the score once again. With 2:47 left in the extra period, Kimble finished a layup to give Barton a 63-62 lead and the upper-hand. Dean gave the Lady Bulldogs a 64-62 cushion by going 1-of-2 at the line until Dreslinski evened the score with 1:20 left to play.
Barton would end the game by hitting all four of its free-throw opportunities to secure the 68-65 victory over the Lions. Jackson earned a trip to the line with five seconds left and would hit both to give BC the three-point edge. The Lions wouldn't be able to draw up a final shot as time expired.
Barton out-rebounded Emmanuel 45-20 in the contest including a 15-0 advantage in offensive rebounds. Emmanuel committed 11 turnovers in the contest, resulting in BC tallying 16 points off those miscues. The Lady Bulldogs finished the game 23-of-62 from the floor, while Emmanuel finished 22-of-58 from the floor. Barton went 20-of-28 at the charity stripe, while the Lions went 16-of-22.
The Lady Bulldogs return home on Jan. 23 as they host Conference Carolinas foe North Greenville University at 5:30 p.m. inside Wilson Gym.
