WILSON, N.C. - Sophomore Maddie Robertson tallied four goals while adding two assists for the Lady Bulldogs as the Barton College women's soccer team defeated Regent University 11-0 at home on Monday in non-conference action.
The margin of victory for the Lady Bulldogs was the largest since Barton beat Chowan, 8-1, in Murfreesboro, N.C., on October 30, 2013, and the 11 goals scored were the most recorded by the Bulldogs at home since a 8-1 win against Chowan during the 2012 season.
Robertson, who scored her first goal of the season for Barton in the fifth minute, gave the Lady Bulldogs (7-6-3) an early 1-0 lead over the Royals after blasting a shot from 30-yards out. Freshman Maddie Adkins played the ball forward for Robertson, who put the ball in-between the crossbar and Regent goalkeeper Kayla Phaneuf.
Barton would remain aggressive and double its lead in the 11th minute. Robertson would score her second goal of the game for BC on a cross from freshman Abigail Paolicchi to make it 2-0. Robertson completed the hat-trick for the Lady Bulldogs with her third goal of the contest in the 16th minute. The Durango, Colorado native made it 3-0 with a header in the box, beating Phaneuf off a corner kick from freshman Kaela Groseclose.
Sophomore Emma Mitchell recorded her first goal of the season in the 19th minute to increase the BC lead to 4-0. The Lady Bulldogs would take a 6-0 lead into the break after sophomore Amanda Barata added a pair of goals in the 32nd and 38th minute of the first half.
Robertson started the second half just like she did the opening half, registering her fourth goal of the game to give the Lady Bulldogs a 7-0 lead in the 61st minute. Robertson would again make the most of a BC corner kick as she found the back of the net after freshman Abigail Wade played the ball into the Regent box.
Groseclose and junior Aryanna Fahnestock tallied their first goals of the season for Barton to extend the lead to 9-0. The Lady Bulldogs recorded their second hat-trick of the night as Barata beat Regent keeper Alexandra Bartlett after receiving a thru ball from Robertson. Groseclose rounded out the scoring for BC in the 88th minute after putting away a rebound off an initial shot from sophomore Taylor Everly. Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bolick recorded her first shutout and win of the season in net for Barton, making one save on one shot. Phaneuf was dealt with the loss for the Royals after allowing eight goals on 14 shots. Phaneuf registered six saves before being replaced by Bartlett, who allowed three goals on three shots.
The Lady Bulldogs outshot Regent 42-1 in the contest, including a 17-1 advantage on frame. BC earned 11 corner kicks, resulting in three goals.
Robertson finished the contest with four goals and two assists for Barton, while nine different players recorded at least one point for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs head to Mars Hill on Wednesday for their final non-conference contest of the season beginning at 5 p.m. Barton returns home to finish the regular season on Saturday, hosting King University as part of Homecoming Weekend at 12 p.m.
