WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 92-63 loss to Limestone College on Thursday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
The game, originally scheduled for early January, was moved to Thursday night because of the recent ice storm that hit the east coast. However, the three-time defending Conference Carolinas champion Saints (13-2, 9-1) were hot from the field in making 57.4 percent of their shots.
Barton (9-7, 6-4) lost for just the second time in its last eight games and struggled to shoot just 36.7 percent from the floor. Limestone also held a 36-28 edge in total rebounds and scored 40 points in the paint.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the game's first basket on a layup from senior Caila Carter, but Limestone responded with 11 unanswered points to build an early lead it never relinquished. Barton scored just nine points in the opening period and trailed 26-9 after game's opening 10 minutes of play. The Saints carried a 19-point advantage into intermission.
In the third quarter, Barton outscored Limestone 21-19, however, the Saints turned the tables with a 26-14 edge in the final quarter of play to seal the road win.
Limestone's Jasmine Richardson led all scorers with 22 points on an 8-for-9 shooting performance as five different Saints scored in double figures.
Sophomore Kianna Wynn once again led the way for the BC offense, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Junior Karimah Dean had 14 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Dinah Neal finished with 12 points and made 4-of-6 shots from the floor. Freshman Angela Caraballo chipped in 10 points of her own, making three first half 3-pointers.
Barton has a quick turnaround as league foe Belmont Abbey College come to Wilson on Saturday, Jan. 21 for a 2 p.m. matchup.
