GAFFNEY, S.C. – Redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane had a career-high 32 digs on defense in helping lead the Barton women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-15) Conference Carolinas victory over Limestone College on Friday night.
Bane's dig total was the highest by a Lady Bulldog in at least the last six years and the high total of her BC career. Junior Laura Peed followed with a season-high 15 digs to go along with three service aces, while senior Mariana Kedzia totaled a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomore Hayley Marshburn also finished with a double-double of 16 kills and 14 digs, as fellow sophomore Angelica Acevedo registered a match-high 41 assists. Sophomore middle Allie Cullens hit .333 with eight kills and three total blocks.
Barton (8-7, 5-1) lost the first set after battling with Limestone (5-11, 1-5) early on. The Saints used a 9-0 run to build a commanding 22-10 lead as a BC service error ended the set in Limestone's favor.
The Saints once again took an early lead in the second set, but Barton fought back to tie the frame at 6-6 before taking the lead thanks to three straight Limestone attack errors. Although Limestone regained the lead at 13-12, Barton continued to battle back and eventually retook the lead at 24-23 on a kill from senior Kaitlyn Micol. Marshburn ended the set in Barton's favor with a kill to tie the match at one-all.
Early in the third set, Barton and Limestone traded points and were tied four different times on the scoreboard. However, The Lady Bulldogs scored four consecutive points midway through and never lost the lead. A Kedzia kill followed by another Limestone attack error sealed the set for BC.
After a back-and-forth beginning to the fourth set, Barton used a 9-0 run to build a 14-5 lead over the Saints. With BC ahead by 14 points, Limestone looked to put together a comeback with a small four-point run, but Marshburn once again ended a set with a kill to give the Lady Bulldogs the match win.
Barton continues conference play tomorrow with a match against Converse College at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
