WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's basketball team struggled on offense, shooting just 26.2 percent from the floor as the Tornado of King University left Wilson Gymnasium with a 73-47 victory on Tuesday night.
King (14-8, 13-3) held on to its second place standing in Conference Carolinas thanks in large part to a 46.2 percent shooting performance from the field and holding a 45-38 advantage on the boards. Barton (10-3, 8-8) did force the Tornado into 23 turnovers but shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from the free throw line in the loss.
The Tornado opened the game on a 7-1 run, leading 10-3 after one quarter of play as Barton's only field goal of the first period came with 39 seconds remaining. King outscored BC 22-11 in the second quarter en route to a 32-14 lead at intermission.
The lead for King grew to as large a margin as 49-27 late in the third quarter as the Lady Bulldogs were unable to get any closer than a 17-point deficit in the second half.
Center Amy Van Deventer totaled 18 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks to lead four Tornado players in double figures.
Junior Caila Carter led the BC offense with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, while sophomore Karimah Dean totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Barton will travel to Converse College on Thursday, February 11 to take on the Valkyries at 5:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
