WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team evened its record in Conference Carolinas play to a 7-7 mark with a 69-64 victory over rival University of Mount Olive on Wednesday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
Barton (9-12, 7-7) shot 49.1 percent from the floor and held a 36-26 edge in points in the paint as Mount Olive (10-10, 8-6) outrebounded BC 35-33 but committed 23 turnovers in the loss.
Freshman Kianna Wynn led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds. Sophomore Alex Kimble finished with 12 points, while junior Caila Carter chipped in 10 points of her own.
Wynn scored the game's first basket with a layup followed by a Kimble three-pointer to give Barton an early lead it never relinquished. BC outscored Mount Olive 19-12 in the opening frame and led by as much as 14 points en route to a 39-25 advantage at intermission.
Mount Olive closed the gap to a single-digit deficit early in the third quarter with an 11-5 run before a three-pointer from freshman JerBria Smith sparked a 10-0 BC run to extend the lead to an 18-point margin.
The Trojans once again cut the Barton lead to single digits, getting as close as a three-point spread late in the game, however, two free throws from sophomore Tatyana Jackson with five seconds remaining sealed the win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Barton travels to Banner Elk, N.C. on Saturday, February 6 to take on Lees-McRae College at 2 p.m. before returning home for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with King University on Tuesday, February 9.
