WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team led late but eventually fell in overtime to the visiting Lions of Emmanuel College 71-68 on Friday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
In a game that featured just three lead changes and six ties, the Lady Bulldogs led with over six minutes to go before the Lions scored the first 10 points of the overtime period to steal a 71-68 Conference Carolinas victory.
Sophomore Alex Kimble produced 16 points for Barton, while freshman JerBria Smith matched a career-high with 15 points and nine rebounds. Fellow freshman Dinah Neal chipped in 14 points of her own.
Emmanuel's Elis Coberly posted 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead her team. Forward Mikayla Trombley scored 14 points with nine rebounds and Timia Reynolds also contributed 14 points. Five different Lions scored in double figures.
The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 14-15 overall and 12-9 in league play. BC will enter the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Monday as the No. 5 seed, and will play No. 4 seed Erskine College in Due West, S.C, at 7 p.m. The Flying Fleet swept the regular season series with Barton.
The Lions led by nine following the first quarter of play, but Barton rebounded to outscore Emmanuel 19-14 in the second quarter and trail by just four points heading into halftime.
A three-pointer from Neal gave Barton its first lead of the game with 8:11 to play in the third quarter. Emmanuel retook the lead with just under two minutes to play and held a seven-point advantage with just one period remaining.
Barton opened the fourth quarter on a 14-2 run to build a 56-51 lead with 5:14 on the game clock. The BC lead held until Emmanuel's Addie McNeeley made a layup with five seconds remaining to force the extra time. The Lions began the overtime period on a 10-0 run which proved too much for BC to overcome.
