WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter comeback to overcome Belmont Abbey College 75-67 on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Gymnasium for the team's fourth win in a row.
Barton moved its season record to 14-13 overall, getting over the .500 mark for the first time since early December, and now stands 12-8 in Conference Carolinas play. The Crusaders fell to 7-19 overall with a 6-14 mark in league play.
Belmont Abbey made 51.9 percent of its shots in the game, but the Lady Bulldogs held a 37-25 edge in total rebounds, including 17 boards on the offensive end. Barton also made seven of its eight free throw attempts as the two teams combined for just 29 total fouls.
The Royal Blue and White led by one after the first quarter of play and held the lead at 32-31 at the halftime break.
Belmont Abbey and Barton traded baskets in the early going of the third quarter as the score was tied at 40-all with 6:01 to play in the period. An 8-2 run gave the Crusaders a six-point lead that Barton was able to cut to just one point following a layup by junior Jasmine Fate as time expired in the quarter.
Junior Caila Carter made two free throws and freshman Kianna Wynn sank back-to-back layups to begin the fourth quarter to give BC the 57-52 lead with 8:58 remaining on the clock.
Belmont Abbey tied the game at 64-64 with just four minutes to play but back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Tatyana Jackson gave Barton a lead it would hold on to until the final buzzer.
Wynn led all players with 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the floor and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Jackson finished with 18 points, making 6-of-8 attempts from long range to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Carter was also in double figures with 10 points as freshman JerBria Smith led the team with six assists while scoring nine points in 26 minutes.
Barton travels to rival Mount Olive on Tuesday, February 23 for a 5:30 p.m. match with the Trojans in their next contest.
