FRANKLING SPRINGS, GA. – The Barton College women's basketball team used a fourth quarter rally to defeat Emmanuel College 64-63 on Saturday afternoon in Williamson Arena.
Barton (12-13, 10-8) shot 48.1 percent from the floor and 50 percent (5-for-10) from long range in the win over Emmanuel (16-7, 12-5). The loss broke a seven-game winning streak for the Lions who currently ranked third in the Conference Carolinas standings.
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start, trailing 17-10 after one quarter of play and 32-27 heading into the halftime break as Emmanuel forced 13 first half turnovers to build its lead.
BC outscored the Lions 22-19 in the third quarter to trail by just two points with 10 minutes remaining on the game clock. The two teams were unable to score in the first minute of the fourth quarter until junior Caila Carter made a layup with 8:50 remaining to tie the score at 51-all.
Freshman JerBria Smith followed by making a layup and free throw, as a jumper from freshman Kianna Wynn put Barton ahead by five with just over seven minutes remaining. Barton's lead never extended to more than a three-point advantage as Emmanuel's best chance to tie the game came with four seconds remaining. '
EC's Mikayla Trombley was fouled shooting a three-pointer and went to the line with a chance to tie the game. Trombley, who had made 80 percent of her free throw attempts entering the game, made her first two shots before missing the final attempt as Barton corralled the defensive rebound to secure the 64-63 victory.
Smith and sophomore Alex Kimble led the offensive attack for the Royal Blue and White as each player finished with 14 points and three rebounds. Sophomore Tatyana Jackson scored 12 points of her own, while Wynn pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds to go with nine points in 33 minutes of action.
Barton will be on the road once again as it travels to Central, S.C. on Wednesday February 17 for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with Southern Wesleyan University.
