SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team shot a season-high 56.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc leading to a 79-73 victory over Converse College on Thursday night.
Barton (11-13, 9-8) made 9-of-16 three-point attempts and shot 50 percent from the floor in the win, holding Converse (4-17, 3-14) to a 35.9 shooting mark. BC also held a 42-35 edge in total rebounds and scored 24 bench points in comparison to just six points by the Valkyries' reserve unit.
Brianna James scored the first seven points for Converse as the Valkyries opened the game on a 7-2 run in the first three minutes of play. Barton rebounded with a 22-10 run to end the first quarter and hold a seven-point lead after one period of play.
BC outscored Converse 16-12 in the second period as sophomore Alex Kimble made a three-pointer with four second left in the half to give the Lady Bulldogs' a 40-29 advantage at the halftime break.
The Lady Bulldogs held a 14-point lead after three quarters of action as Converse looked to mount a comeback in the final 10 minutes. The Valkyries outscored Barton 29-21 in the final quarter but BC make six of its final 12 free throw attempts to hold on for the six-point win.
James led all players with 31 points, while Converse's Yashee Johnson totaled 15 points,15 rebounds and 10 blocks for a triple-double.
Kimble led BC with 26 points, making 6-of-11 three-point attempts, to go along with six rebounds, while freshman JerBria Smith finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists off of the bench.
Sophomore Tatyana Jackson and freshman Kianna Wynn each totaled 10 points in the game as junior Caila Carter was just shy of a double-double scoring nine points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.
Barton travels to Franklin Springs, Ga. on Saturday, February 13 for a matchup with the Lions of Emmanuel College at Noon.
