BRISTOL, TENN. – Trailing by as many as eight points entering the fourth quarter of play, the Barton women's volleyball looked to mount a comeback against King University on the road. However, the rally fell just short in a 69-67 Conference Carolinas loss to the Tornado inside the Student Center Complex.
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the league, while the Tornado improved to 5-2 and remained undefeated at 3-0 in conference play.
Four different players scored eight first half points for King as the Tornado built 42-35 lead at intermission. The lead remained in King's favor for much of the third quarter as Barton's Taura Jones hit a three-pointer with 4:31 remaining to spark a 10-0 run for BC.
The run allowed the Lady Bulldogs to pull within four points of the Tornado lead, however, KU scored back-to-back baskets to close the quarter and extend its lead back to an eight-point margin.
Barton and King traded baskets in the early going of the final quarter of play as BC was never able to get any closer than a three-point deficit. Two free throws from sophomore Ciera Williams and a layup from classmate Kianna Wynn got Barton within a point of tying the score with 40 second left.
King's Sheena Johnson made one of two free throw attempts to put the lead back to a two-point margin as freshman Angela Caraballo narrowly missed a three-point attempt as the game clock hit zero.
Wynn led Barton with her second double-double of the season, scoring 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Caila Carter scored 12 points of her own, while sophomore JerBria Smith had 10 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes off of the bench.
Four different Tornado players scored in double figures, led by Whitney Mitchell who had a game-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
The Lady Bulldogs travel to UNC Greensboro for a non-conference matchup on Monday, Dec. 5 before hosting Converse College in its first home contest of the season on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
