SAVANNAH, Ga. – For the second straight night, the Barton women's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit, but this time the Lady Bulldogs came out victorious with a 74-65 win over No. 24 Clayton State University in the 3rd Annual B.J. Ford Classic hosted by Armstrong State University.
After leading by four points following the first quarter of play, Barton trailed 29-28 at intermission. Freshman Angela Caraballo scored a career-high points, including 11 in the second half of play, to lead the BC comeback and secure the team's second win of the season.
Clayton State began the second half of the game extending its lead to a three-point margin before Caraballo evened the score at 31-31 with a three-pointer. The Richmond, Va. resident scored the next five points for the Lady Bulldogs to put her side ahead 36-34 after converting a free throw following a foul on a made layup.
The score was once again tied at 43-43 late in the third period before the Lakers used a 6-0 run to carry a six-point lead into the final quarter of action. A three-pointer from junior Tatyana Jackson evened the score at 53-all earlier in the fourth quarter as BC took a four-point lead on back-to-back shots from sophomore JerBria Smith and senior Caila Carter.
With just under three minutes to play in the game, Clayton State retook the lead 65-64. However, a Kianna Wynn layup sparked a 10-o run for the Lady Bulldogs over the final 2:40 of play to complete the comeback on a neutral court.
Wynn finished the game with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Smith and fellow sophomore Dinah Neal each totaled 10 points off of the bench. Junior Karimah Dean also played a pivotal role as a reserve, leading all players with 10 points to go along with six points.
Barton shot 48.5 percent in the contest, including 45.5 percent (5-for-11) from three-point range and scored 18 second chance points in the victory.
The Lady Bulldogs open Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday, Nov. 22 with a 5:30 p.m. contest against Erskine Collee in Due West, S.C.
