WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's soccer program celebrated Senior Night but little else during a 5-0 whipping by visiting Pfeiffer University on Wednesday at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
The Falcons (7-4-1, 6-1) completely dominated play, taking 29 shots to just three for BC (5-6, 4-3).
Sophomore Ryanna Hammond scored Pfeiffer's first two goals, the first after a through ball by Hailey Havelind in the 16th minute and the other in the 37th minute after beating Barton keeper Haley Sauls one-on-one following an entry pass from Aryana Harvey.
Just 37 seconds after Hammond's second score, teammate Kat Kelley added another Falcon tally after receiving a touch pass from Kirsten Martin.
Pfeiffer, which maintained a tie for second place in Conference Carolinas with the win, took the 3-0 lead and an 18-1 shot advantage into intermission. Barton surrendered an own goal in the 74th minute, and Harvey finished the scoring with a breakaway goal with just under six minutes to play.
Sauls recorded a career-high 11 saves in the loss, but did so while facing a barrage of 27 shots by the Falcons.
Allison Bell, one of the three Barton seniors honored at halftime, played the last 15 minutes, producing one save and giving up the last of the five goals.
Also recognized for their contributions to the program were Tonya Garcia and Kelly Dolan.
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs slipped into a tie for fourth place with Lees-McRae College, which played outside the conference on Wednesday. Barton will play a pair of matches this weekend, visiting Erskine College for a league match on Saturday and traveling to Chowan University for a non-conference matchup on Sunday.
