MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Freshman Ellen Jayne scored her first collegiate goal and handed head coach Thomas Goines a victory in his Barton College debut as the Lady Bulldogs edged Goldey-Beacom College, 1-0, in a weather-shortened women's soccer match Friday afternoon at University of Mount Olive's Amon Field.
The contest, the first match in the Believe Kickoff Classic Sponsored by Jordan Logistics, was called at the 73:35 mark due to lightning. The storms came just three minutes after Jayne struck with the game's only goal, scoring in front of the near post by finishing off a crossing pass from the right wing by sophomore Taylor Doeble.
Jayne is one of two players who joined the roster this year from Illinois, where Goines coached the previous four seasons at NCAA Division III Concordia University Chicago. A resident of Elgin, Jayne collected the game-winner just two minutes after entering the contest for the first time in the half.
Barton produced twice as many shots in the contest as Goldey-Beacom (10-5), ironically nicknamed the Lightning. Five of BC's attempts were on-frame compared to two for GBC. Senior keeper Kelsey Rothwell made the two stops in net for the Lady Bulldogs while earning the shutout. Cindell Aquirre produced four saves in a losing effort for Goldey-Beacom, a Delaware-based program and member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
The Lady Bulldogs will make their 2015 home debut on Sunday when they host regional foe Georgia College in a 1 p.m. contest at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex. The Bobcats faced off against host University of Mount Olive later Friday in the second game of the Believe Kickoff Classic.
