BUENA VISTA, Va. – Lane Brooks and Emily Futral each scored a pair of goals as Barton College cruised to a 5-0 road victory over Southern Virginia University in a non-conference women's soccer meeting on Wednesday.
Futral also assisted the first two goals for the Lady Bulldogs (4-2-2), giving her a career-high six points in the match. The senior from Richlands, N.C., has now scored in three straight matches and has 11 points over that span.
Barton enjoyed a 28-8 edge in shots over the NCAA Division III Knights (3-7) and recorded its highest goal total in a match since the Lady Bulldogs defeated Chowan, 8-1, in October of 2013.
BC keepers Kelsey Rothwell and Allison Bell combined on the shutout, Barton's fourth of the season. Bell had all three saves for the Lady Bulldogs, including an outstanding diving stop on Southern Virginia's best attempt of the day with 4:30 to play in the contest.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the first half with a trio of goals in a span of five minutes. Brooks started the scoring in the 11th minute by firing in a shot from the right wing after a touch pass by Futral.
In the 13th minute, Futral collected another assist by driving into the right corner and crossing the ball in front of the net, where Tanya Garcia finished the play with a header.
Less than two minutes later, Brooks struck again from nearly the same spot as her first goal, this time by driving downfield after an entry pass from Garcia.
Rothwell did not face a shot on goal during her time between the pipes for BC in the first half, and the Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a 17-1 edge in total attempts in the period.
Barton continued to dominate play early in the second half, and Futral eventually cashed in with her first goal of the day after spinning and firing from the left wing just into the 63rd minute.
Two and a half minutes later, Futral dribbled through several SVU defenders on the left wing and beat Southern Virginia's second keeper of the game, Savannah Uri, to extend the lead to five.
Three Knight keepers combined on eight saves in the losing cause. Starter Carmel Hardy collected five of those.
Barton will return to Conference Carolinas play this weekend, visiting Lees-McRae College for a 2 p.m. match.
