WILSON, N.C. – Playing in just its second home game of the 2015 season, the Barton College women's volleyball team lost its Conference Carolinas opener 3-1 to visiting Limestone College on Friday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
Barton (4-6, 0-1) was able to get ahead early with a 25-17 victory over Limestone (5-2, 1-1) in the first set of action. Despite the Saints building a 6-2 lead in the early going, the Bulldogs were able to mount a comeback and tie the game at 8-8. The two teams played to just one more tie in the opening set as BC used a 16-8 run to end the set and gain the advantage.
However, Limestone tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-20 victory in the next set before going ahead 2-1 over Barton with a 25-18 win in the third set of play. The Bulldogs and Saints played to 19 total ties over the second and third sets as Limestone was able to used two late runs to hold off Barton.
Limestone built an 8-3 lead early in the fourth set after back-to-back kills from Erin Courtenay and controlled the momentum with BC able to close the gap late in the set.
With the Saints leading 24-19, the Bulldogs used four consecutive kills from sophomore Stephanie Pingyin to get within one point of a tie, but a kill by Rycki Ebert closed the door and gave Limestone the 3-1 match win.
Ebert led Limestone with 15 kills and 14 digs as the Saints were able to hit .262 as a team compared to a .229 hitting percentage from Barton.
Pingyin led the Royal Blue and White with her third double-double of the season, finishing with a match-high 23 kills to go along with 11 digs. Freshman Hayley Marshburn also turned in a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, as junior Mariana Kedzia finished with 11 kills of her own.
Sophomore Laura Peed recorded a career-high with 21 digs, while freshman Angelica Acevedo turned in her first career double-double with a match-high 48 assists and 11 digs.
Barton will look to even its record in league play as Converse College visits Wilson Gymnasium tomorrow. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
