TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Barton College sophomore Tiffany Webster scored 16 of her career-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Lady Bulldogs past North Greenville University, 70-65, in a Conference Carolinas women's basketball matchup Wednesday night at Hayes Gymnasium.
The Alexandria, Va., resident scored half of her points during a key 12-2 run that turned a 46-all tie into a 58-48 Barton advantage with 7:54 left.
North Greenville (10-14, 9-9) whittled the deficit down to two points with 3:08 to play on a pair of free throws by Tyler Powers, but Webster went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to seal Barton's third straight victory and a season sweep of the Crusaders.
Barton improved to 12-12 overall with the win and moved into fourth place in the league standings at 11-6.
In addition to Webster's career night, the Lady Bulldogs received 17 points from sophomore Shatisha Dukes, 11 points from senior Kaila Lea and a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds from senior Brianna Thomas. Sophomore Caila Carter chipped in nine rebounds, all the first half.
Timisty Nelson tossed in 19 points for the Crusaders. Courtney Williams added 18, and Alisha Hope contributed 10 points and nine boards.
The contest consisted of a series of runs. Barton used six early points from Dukes and four from freshman Tatyana Jackson to jump ahead 14-9 five minutes into the contest.
However, North Greenville received four points each from Hope, Cortney Williams and Erika Cobb as part of a 15-3 spurt that gave the Crusaders their biggest lead of the night at 24-17 with 7:08 to go before intermission.
Barton responded by closing out the half on an 18-4 run to take its own seven-point cushion, 35-28, into the locker room.
The Lady Bulldogs extended their advantage to double-digits for the first time in the contest, 40-30, on a Jackson layup with 18:47 to play, but North Greenville used six points from Emily Wampler and four points each from Nelson and Williams to make up a 16-6 surge that tied the game at 46-all with 12:30 to go before Webster led the decisive Barton run.
Barton shot nearly 46 percent from the field in the game, including 52 percent in the second half, while holding the Crusaders to just 38 percent. The Lady Bulldogs also out-rebounded NGU 46 to 34.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. contest at Pfeiffer University.
