BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Barton College women's basketball team fell behind 7-0 in its Conference Carolinas opener at King University on Tuesday night and never recovered in dropping a 72-61 decision to the Tornado.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-3, 0-1) rallied to within a point at 22-21 halfway through the second quarter on a layup by Kianna Wynn, who had 14 points and 14 rebounds in a losing cause. However, Barton turned the ball over on each of its next three possessions, and King (2-3, 1-0) quickly turned the miscues into a 7-0 run.
The Tornado forced Barton into 17 first-half turnovers and scored 20 points off those mistakes in taking a 36-27 halftime advantage.
Barton took better care of the basketball in the second half, committing just five turnovers while forcing King into 10, and used a pair of late 3-pointers by Chanel Shannon to trim a 14-point deficit down to just six at 67-61 with 1:38 to play. However, Arnelle Collins drilled a 3-pointer on the Tornado's next possession, ending any chances of a Barton comeback.
Collins led all scorers in the game with 15 points. Whitney Mitchell added 13 points and Jalan Harper chipped in 10 for King. Amy Van Deventer collected 12 rebounds for the Tornado, which out-rebounded the Lady Bulldogs by 12 in the contest, 44-32.
In addition to the double-double from Wynn, the league's reigning player of the week, Barton received 13 points from JerBria Smith and 10 from Karimah Dean.
Both teams shot 41 percent from the field in the game, but King made three more 3-pointers in the game to account for much of the final margin.
Barton will take a holiday break before returning to action next Tuesday, Dec. 1, at home against league foe Converse College.
