WILSON, N.C. – Barton College and Emmanuel College produced 31 combined shots in their Conference Carolinas women's soccer match on Saturday, but departed the pitch with a scoreless tie after none of those attempts found the back of the net.
Barton senior keeper Kelsey Rothwell produced eight saves, seven of those coming in the second half and overtime, to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. The Durham, N.C., resident's best save of the day came when she turned away an open look in the box from Stephanie Lamm three minutes into the final overtime frame.
Emmanuel used two keepers in producing its second shutout of the season. Marina Eisenhut played the second half and overtime for the Lions, collecting two of the three total saves. She knocked down a diving header by Della Futral off a corner kick in the waning moments of the match to preserve the tie.
Barton (6-5-4, 2-4-4) narrowly missed the frame on a number of other attempts. Several shots by Lane Brooks and Della Futral went just over the crossbar, as did an attempt by Emily Futral that proved to be BC's best look at the goal in the first overtime session. Emily Futral also narrowly missed the left post on a shot from the right wing with just over two minutes left in regulation.
For all their 17 chances, the Lady Bulldogs finished match with no goals for the fourth straight conference match. Barton has now gone more than 476 minutes without scoring in league play since Emily Futral's goal against King University two weeks ago.
Likewise, Emmanuel was held without a goal for the seventh straight match. However, the Lions did end a six-match losing streak with the tie.
The tie leaves Barton in eighth place in the league, the final qualifying spot for the upcoming conference tournament. The Lady Bulldogs are fighting with North Greenville University and Lees-McRae College for spots seven and eight. BC's only remaining league match is at North Greenville on Halloween Night.
Before that contest takes place, however, the Lady Bulldogs will make a non-conference visit to Wingate University on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to take on the top-ranked team in the Southeast Region.
