WILSON, N.C. - The Barton College women's soccer team delivered its highest offensive output of the season on Saturday in a 4-0 shutout of visiting Southern Wesleyan University.
The Lady Bulldogs, now 4-1-1 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas, scored twice in each half against the Warriors (0-6, 0-3) and might have had several more goals except for the seven saves of SWU freshman keeper Courtney McNeil.
Freshman Lane Brooks got Barton on the board 13 minutes into the contest when she accepted a crossing pass from Taylor Doeble directly on net a couple of steps inside the box and pushed it past McNeil for her team-high fifth goal of the year. The assist was the second of the season for Doeble.
Just 3:35 before intermission, the Lady Bulldogs struck again, as junior Emily Futral drove the ball just off the right post and crossed the ball to sophomore Grace Fehan, who finished the play for her first career goal. The assist was the first of the year for Futral.
Southern Wesleyan left Barton's starting keeper, Carson Moore, untested in the opening half. The Warriors attempted three shots in the period, but all were wide of the net.
The Warriors did put four attempts on frame in the second half, all saved by Moore, the last one on a spectacular diving stop to her left on a shot by Beth Spence from the far left wing toward the right post. Moore shared the shutout with backup keeper Kelsey Rothwell, who played the final three minutes.
Barton extended its lead to 3-0 in the 71st minute when junior Ashley Batchelor beat a couple of Southern Wesleyan defenders on a drive just off the right post, drawing McNeil off her line and then chipping the ball over her for her second goal of the year.
The Lady Bulldogs capped the scoring with a goal by senior Kasey Byzewski off a free kick from the far left wing some 30 yards out. The shot into the bottom right corner of the net was her first goal of the season.
Barton enjoyed a 17-9 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in attempts on goal. The Lady Bulldogs took all eight corner kicks in the match.
The margin of victory was the largest for Barton since an 8-1 thrashing of Chowan University last year. Barton also posted its third consecutive shutout, the first time that's happened since early in the 2013 campaign.
Barton will go for four straight shutouts and wins when it visits Lincoln University, Pa., on Wednesday.
