ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-The Barton College women's soccer team put together a competitive first half with Palm Beach Atlantic University on Sunday, but the Sailfish pulled away midway through the second period en route to a 4-0 victory at the Flagler College Kick-Off Classic.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the young season, while Palm Beach Atlantic moved to 1-0-1 on the year.
Barton had its best opportunity to score 36 minutes into the contest. Trailing 1-0 at the time, sophomore forward Jodi Barber beat her defender to a long, deep lob pass, leaving her one-on-one with the keeper. However, PBA senior goalie Allison Fox charged toward Barber and dove to knock down the shot attempt. The ball bounced away, allowing senior Taylor DeMartini a second shot attempt, but that one missed high and left.
The Lady Bulldogs had few other chances. Barton managed to put just three of its 10 shot attempts on goal in the match, and all three were turned away by Fox. Barton's 2012 all-conference keeper, Carson Moore, recorded nine saves in the match, but faced 16 shots, 13 of those on target.
The Sailfish opened the scoring 15 minutes into the contest when Kasey Wyer put in a rebound off the hands of Moore, who had knocked down a crossing pass from the right corner.
The Lady Bulldogs held their own through the rest of the period, but Palm Beach Atlantic struck again 15 minutes into the second half when Wyer fired a pass into the box that was headed home by Karina White.
The Sailfish put the finishing touches on their victory with two goals in a three-minute span. With 15 minutes left to play, Lesslee Hernandez drove to her left along the top of the box, then fired a curling shot past Moore and into the upper left corner of the net. A short time later, Hernandez assisted on a goal by Kierstyn Harrington, which came from directly in front of the net 15 yards out.
The win was Palm Beach Atlantic's second over Barton in as many seasons. The Sailfish edged the Lady Bulldogs, 1-0, last year in Wilson.
Barton will make its 2013 home debut on Friday against USC Aiken.
