WILSON, N.C.-The Barton College women's soccer team recorded its fifth win in six matches Saturday night with a 6-1 victory over Limestone College in Conference Carolinas play at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Jodi Barber scored two goals and assisted three others for the Lady Bulldogs, now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. Emily Futral added a pair of goals, and Taylor Parrish picked up her fourth of the year in the rout.
Limestone (3-4-1, 1-2-0) got a late goal from Grace Gore to prevent Barton from collecting its fifth shutout of the year.
The Saints came into the contest with the second-best scoring offense in the league, but it was Barton who struck early and often this time. The Lady Bulldogs scored just over 14 minutes into the contest when Barber passed a ball from the middle of the field down the left wing to Parrish. Limestone keeper Mariette Martinez stepped out to stop the attack, but Parrish beat her to the ball and easily finished the play into an open net for a 1-0 Barton lead.
Twenty minutes later, Lindsay Rembecki touched a pass to Barber, who touched it back to Rembecki driving the left sideline. No one stopped the sophomore defender, who then beat Martinez to her right for the Lady Bulldogs' second goal of the day.
Less than a minute later, Barber drove the right wing after receiving a pass from Amanda Almonte, putting the ball away for a 3-0 advantage that Barton took to intermission.
The second half began much as the first half had ended. Just over two minutes into the second period, Barton defender Kasey Byzewski fired a free kick from midfield into the Limestone box, where Futral was waiting to put the ball away past backup keeper Whitney Salonich.
Ten minutes later, Futral struck again on a give-and-go with Barber in the box. Barber added a sixth goal in the 57th minute after beating several defenders driving the left wing.
Parrish, Barber and Futral all share the team lead in goals with four each. Barber also has four assists for a team-high 12 points.
Barton has allowed just two goals in its last six matches, and both have come on the same type of play – a deep ball from 30 yards out that manages to get over the head of keeper Carson Moore. Gore scored hers for Limestone in the 64th minute by firing in a loose ball.
Moore stopped both of the Saints' other two shots on goal in the contest. Barton had nine shots on goal, with Martinez stopping two and Salonich saving one.
The contest was the last of a three-game home stand for the Lady Bulldogs, who will play their next four matches on the road, beginning Tuesday night at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Va.
